Our Story

Jiu Jitsu 101 is a modern martial arts academy that is rooted in old-school martial arts philosophy. We honor the teachers that came before us, and we respect the martial code.

Our martial arts base and lineage is a combination of Combative Karate Jutsu (Kyokushin & Kokondo Karate), Japanese Jujutsu (Judo) and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ).

The JOURNEY
to jiu jitsu 101

You might know us as the Asylum Combat Academy, which has been operating since 2009, first formed in Portland, Oregon.

In 2013, the school moved from Portland, Oregon to Vancouver, Washington continuing as mainly a Karate, JJJ and Judo academy.

I had started doing BJJ under a different association prior to meeting Professor Mike Downing in late 2010. In 2014, after proper protocols had been established we transitioned officially to an affiliation Dojo under Professor Michael Downing and the Oregon Pound BJJ in southern Oregon. In 2018, Sensei Downing transferred Oregon Pound to one of his blackbelt students and then formed San Juan Brazilian jiu-jitsu in Aztec, New Mexico, when he moved with his wife.

In October 2022, my family and I decided it was time for a change, so we set off toward the Oregon Coast to embrace a slower pace of life, still dedicated to daily training. I brought my passion for martial arts with me to Rockaway Beach Oregon, training where I could, with anyone who wanted to learn. I wanted to take a new approach to my journey– one centered around community, wellness, family and empowerment of others. This is where the new chapter begins.

On October 1st, 2023, I established the Asylum Combat Academy Oregon Coast, moving it from Vancouver Washington to our current location. Taking guidance from my new mantra, it became clear a new name would be appropriate, so the Asylum Combat Academy would be changed to Jiu Jitsu 101, named for our location on the iconic highway 101 that runs in front of the school, and our commitment to basic principles (101).

We want to welcome everyone to our school and journey. Whether you are brand new to the martial arts and combat sports, or you are seasoned student with decades of experiences, we have a place for you– we all learn from each other and grow together.

CAYSEA MCBRIDE

INSTRUCTOR

I started training under our head coach (Shihan) in 2017. Since then, I have progressed to become a two division amateur champion and currently fight as a professional martial arts competitor.

When I started this journey, I had no idea that MMA would develop into a dream of mine. At the time, I needed to feel like I belonged. Shihan believed in me and gave me a chance at a new life, a chance to excel in a way I’d be proud of. Taking martial arts seriously brought me closer to my family and to being the person I want to be; honest, accountable, and strong mentally, as well as physically. I learned that I was stronger than I ever thought possible

Teaching at Jiu Jitsu 101 lets me share this journey with others, and it makes me so happy to watch as they accomplish things they didn’t know they could. Sharing my knowledge also teaches me more about the art, and how we can all grow together as martial artists.

Thank you to Shihan Colburn and Nihan Downing for all the years they have dedicated to martial arts and upholding a standard we can all respect.

My journey,

Over the years involving myself heavily in the combative martial arts (Kyokushin & Kokondo Karate, Combat Judo, Japanese JuJutsu), I developed a system known as Kazato-hen Jutsu (KHJi) while I continued my studies under my current mentors (Instructors). In 1996, I started a few affiliate extensions classes in the local fitness clubs around the Portland and Gresham area with a primary KHJi headquarters school I had started located in North Portland area (Kenton)

My Martial journey has introduced me to countless others who greatly influenced my life course and lead me to my current mentors Professor Michael Downing and Master Pedro Sauer.

I have been a black belt instructor in my previous systems for going on 38 years & currently hold a certified Brown belt in Brazilian jiujitsu teaching under the guidance of Professor Downing for over 10 years and counting. I am honored and eager to continue my journey sharing my knowledge and experiences while continuing to grow personally with the next generation of martial artists here on the Oregon Coast.

My personal mantra:

“STUDENT FIRST, INSTRUCTOR SECOND”

MARKETING & CREATIVE

I moved to the Oregon Coast in October 2023, after years of living nomadically abroad and all over the West Coast. I had always been an avid climber, cyclist, surfer, and snowboarder— but my martial arts journey started here, training under Shihan Colburn.

Training jiu jitsu has given me an opportunity to learn new skills, practice discipline, and get more involved with an incredible community of inspiring people.

I'm motivated by inspiring others to grow in all areas of life—which is why as a creative professional, I'm honored to further this mission with the Jiu Jitsu Oregon Coast family.

Beyond my work at the academy, I offer freelance services for businesses looking to elevate their brand presence, and I'm always eager to work with people that are doing impactful work in their communities.
